Chapter Eight
I sigh and drop the folder onto the useless pile. It isn't technically called that, but it might as well be.
"Nothing good?" Pippa asks as she adds her own folder to the pile.
"Nope. I'm not sure what we were expecting."
"We just have to wait for Regina to do something."
"Don't remind me. She has waiting down to an art. I don't think I've ever come across someone with patience like hers." It's starting to get more annoying than anything else.
"But it's only a matter of time. She's not happy that you got away. We saw that much on the camera footage."
"She probably realises I'm back at the station too. Maybe she's waiting for the higher-ups to do something to stop me and do her job for her." I try not to sound too hurt by it, but a small part of me is. She put so much effort into getting hold of me that it seems odd she's not interested in returning me to her control.
"Hmm. That is a possibility," Pippa admits.
"We need to talk to Michelson and find out who's been giving him the questionable orders."
She raises an eyebrow. "Do you really think he'll tell us?"
"I have no idea," I admit. "But it's better than sifting through all the paperwork the three of us have read dozens of times already."
"Good point. Elias is in a meeting with him now, maybe we should go and ask our boss some hard questions." Pippa is on her feet and halfway to the door before I've even processed what she's saying.
I sigh. "Nothing like putting our jobs on the line for something that could lead nowhere."
"Without great risk, there are no great rewards. Are you coming?" She jerks her head towards the door.
"Yes. But I also don't think that's true. You can get good things without taking big risks."
"Well, I'm still willing to take one." She's out of the room before saying anything else.
I shake my head in bemusement. I guess she doesn't have any doubts about whether I'll follow. She isn't wrong. I want to know what's said in that room.
I get to my feet and start to make my way towards the door, stopping partway. I head to Elias' desk and pull open the bottom drawer, searching for the recording device I know is there.
If we're going to confront Michelson about the orders he's been receiving, then we better get him on tape so we can use the information he gives us in a formal capacity. We're not going to risk our careers for nothing.
I shut the drawer and hurry after Pippa.
The door to Michelson's office is ajar and I can hear voices already. I hope she hasn't already got the information we need out of him. I suppose it would be good on the one hand. The sooner we know which of the higher-ups is in Regina's pocket, the sooner we can do something about it. But if we want to hold Michelson accountable for the terrible decisions he's been making, then we need to record it.
